From My Family to All Who Serve Our Country

Over the holidays, my wife's work had a holiday party for the staff. It was what one would consider the typical 'office party'. Live DJ, Open bar, etc. Nice little restaurant theme overall.

Anyway, we were in there with I believe two other office parties, from other businesses in the area. From a money making aspect, I can see putting as many people as you can into one large ballroom.

As the evening progressed, I noticed a young man in full marine dress unifom. He had gotten up and gone to the bar and was directly in front of me. He was discussing his being home with a friend of his, and how he enjoyed the short time he had at home. He also mentioned hearing a rumor about having to go back soon.

Well, I had heard enough. I approachede the young man and stuck my hand out.

"Sir, I want to shake your hand, and also tell you how proud I am of you. My family and I appreciate everything you are doing for us, and we cannot repay you for that."

He smiled, and thanked me. "I haven't heard much of that since I have been back"

I told him "Well, you are among friends tonight. Here is a couple of bucks. The next beers are on me"

I figured, if he gets shot at for me, the least I can do is buy the man a drink.

The evening progressed well, we caught each others eye a few times and gave a nod of appreciation.

When the time came for my wife and me to leave, he came over and shook my hand. "Thank you very much for those words, and for the drink"

I told him it is I that should be thanking him. His fiance' came over and we all briefly chatted, wishing each other a wonderful Christmas.

Now it may seem like it wasn't much of a gesture, but I would like to think in some small way, I was able to brighten up his time home.

It was good of you to do that for him. I am sorry it has been more rare than I would have hoped. Thanks for the good post and let's hope you start a new trend for 2005.

"Sir, I want to shake your hand, and also tell you how proud I am of you. My family and I appreciate everything you are doing for us, and we cannot repay you for that."

You are a true gentleman, this brightens my day.

He smiled, and thanked me. "I haven't heard much of that since I have been back"

Unfortunately, this darkens it.
